Yukon RCMP Sgt. James Giczi killed in off-duty motorcycle crash near Whitehorse

WHITEHORSE — A longtime RCMP member in Yukon has died in an off-duty motorcycle accident in the territory.

Yukon Chief Coroner Heather Jones says Sgt. James Giczi of Whitehorse was killed Friday evening when his motorbike went off the South Klondike Highway, about 40 kilometres south of the city.

The 56-year-old Mountie had been based in the capital for more than a decade and was in charge of Yukon RCMP's forensic identification unit.

Jones says Giczi was returning to Whitehorse with a friend after a day-trip to Skagway, Alaska when the crash occurred.

Alcohol and road conditions are not believed to be factors.

The coroner says an autopsy will be performed. (CKRW)
