Ahead of the Barbie movie being released on July 21, new research has revealed the Barbie dolls that collectors and unknowing owners alike could fetch almost £8,000 for. Debt specialist Carrington Dean used eBay purchasing data to reveal how much Barbie dolls have been auctioned for over the past six months.
The Gallery Opening Barbie Doll took the top spot, with collectors paying up to £7,800 for the 2010 doll. Barbie’s boyfriend remains in her shadow even at auction, with the most expensive Ken doll to be sold in the last six months fetching a mere £282.72.
Other owners of the Barbie memorabilia could also be sitting on a small fortune. The Life Ball Barbie (1999) and City Smart Barbie (2003) recently sold for £3,150 and £2,000 respectively.
Nostalgia still proves popular with iconic vintage dolls such as the Ponytail Barbie doll, which made her debut in 1959 and could fetch you £1,800. The Color Magic Barbie, another vintage classic produced in 1960, recently went for £1,260.
You don’t have to be an oldie to own a goldie though, with Y2K era onwards Barbie dolls like the Gallery Opening Doll, City Smart Barbie, Cher Barbie and Violette Barbie topping the table of the most valuable collectors items, averaging at £3,195.
Layla Johnson, regional manager at Carrington Dean, said: “The upcoming Barbie movie is exciting for fans and collectors alike, with nostalgia proving popular for the auction of Barbie dolls. Often played with once and forgotten about, or tucked away in a box, the value of Barbie dolls is varied, but could be big enough to buy you your own Malibu dream house if you’re lucky.
"Whether you’re strapped for cash or are just curious about how much you could fetch for the dolls you used to play with, it may be worth taking a look online to see how much they are worth and potentially gain a bonus during the cost of living crisis”.
