Your guide to enjoying 2022 New Year's Eve celebrations in Perth

Crowd numbers at 2022 New Year's Eve celebrations in Perth are expected to bounce back in the absence of COVID restrictions.

After last year's events were scaled back amid an outbreak of the virus, this year's celebrations are expected to go off with a bang.

Families will be well catered for with a fun fair in Elizabeth Quay, which will deliver a festival atmosphere with rides, performances, a sideshow alley and food trucks from 5pm.

Entry to the fun fair is free but revellers will need to buy tokens to go on the rides and play sideshow games.

There will also be a family-friendly fireworks display in Elizabeth Quay at 9pm, before the main fireworks extravaganza lights up the sky at midnight in Northbridge.

Fireworks will be launched from four rooftops in Northbridge, with the City of Perth recommending Yagan Square, Perth Cultural Centre, Northbridge Piazza and James Street as the best viewing spots.

Tens of thousands to line foreshore

Perth's Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas expects tens of thousands of people to make their way to the city centre to celebrate.

He expects this year's celebrations at Elizabeth Quay to be "bigger than ever".

"It will be tens of thousands of people, no doubt, in the whole precinct," Mr Zempilas said.

"That is a very, very conservative number. It will be many thousands of people."

Mr Zempilas said the city has rebounded from last year's scaled-back celebrations.

"We're absolutely thrilled with how Perth and Perth City in particular has bounced back from the COVID restrictions of earlier in this year," he said.

Fireworks can also be seen in Burswood, City Beach, Rottnest Island and other sites across Perth, as well as many across the state.

Public transport to be boosted

More buses and trains will be put on to allow people to travel to and from the city safely.

Transperth spokesman David Hynes said trains would run through the night and well into New Year's Day.

"There's frequent trains after midnight and then it peters out a bit," he told ABC Radio Perth.

"Buses, which normally cut out around about midnight, some are on the main arterial routes running through until about four o'clock."

Travel on Transperth services will also be free between midnight and 6am on New Year's Day.

The RSPCA has also reminded pet owners that New Year's Eve fireworks can be a scary time for pets.

It warns many pets are left trembling and traumatised and some get lost while trying to escape the noise.

Road closures

Enchantress Way, Duchess Way and Geoffrey Bolton Avenue in Elizabeth Quay will be closed from 3pm.

In Northbridge, James Street between Parker Street and the James Street cul-de-sac will be closed from 5pm to 5am, as will Lake Street between Roe and Francis Streets.

Drivers can find the closest City of Perth parking spots here.

Western Australia will also feature in Times Square celebrations in New York City as part of the state's tourism campaign

A three-dimensional whale shark will loom larger than life on four billboards in and around the square, with a fifth located at the 42nd Street subway station.
