Your Friday night playlist curated by Gen-Z pop star Mimi Webb

Today Mimi Webb is in Plymouth, tomorrow she’ll be in Bournemouth, and on Monday she’s set to headline London’s Eventim Apollo. It’s no surprise then that our phone call is kept brief, as she hops from one city to the next. Monday’s gig will mark the last leg of her sold-out European tour, which began in Spain last month, before festival season gets underway.

“I’m most excited for the festivals. There’s some really cool festivals coming up and I’m main-staging so many of them. I’m so excited to be able to experience that energy” says the 22-year-old, BRIT Award nominee. Originally from Canterbury and born Amelia Webb, the singer rose to fame mid-pandemic when TikToker Charli D’Amelio filmed a video using Webb’s debut single Before I Go. As most things do under the influence of D’Amelio, the track quickly went viral.

Since then, Webb’s reach has far surpassed the realms of social media. She released her debut album Amelia last month; has amassed over 7.5 million monthly Spotify listeners; was nominated for this year’s BRIT Rising Star Award; and has even been told by Harry Styles that she’s smashing it.

An ode to her TikTok beginnings, below Webb has picked her top five tracks for a Friday night - when she’d usually be hitting the town with friends. “I like to stay in on a Saturday because I get very hungover” she laughs, “Friday is the night for socialising.” (Discover our full collection of Friday night playlists here)

Low - SZA

“I picked Low by SZA because I just love the vibe. It’s such a cool tune, it’s really rhythmic and the whole song is about this undercover relationship where you don’t really want anyone to know what’s going on in public with this other person. I love the whole idea behind the song. The beat is insane. It makes me feel confident and powerful.”

Watermelon Sugar - Harry Styles

“This really makes me feel like summer is here - it’s probably the watermelon reference. It’s one of my favourites.”

Cool Kids - Echosmith

“I’ve been listening to this song for a really long time now. I’ve always gone back to it and can never get it out of my head. Again, it has such a summer feel.”

Ceilings - Lizzy McAlpine

“I love this song, it’s so emotional. You’d probably listen to it at the end of a Friday night, in my opinion it’s one of the best songs that’s been written this year. The idea behind it too, the imagination and thinking you’ve found that person and then it’s not true. It’s such a cool hook.”

Graveyard - Halsey

“This song brings back a lot of memories for me when I went through breakups. This is that song where you think ‘I would’ve followed you anywhere’ and then someone walks out on you and you realise what you would’ve done for them. I love the concept and the dynamic and way that it grows. You feel very in it.”
