Your body's warning signs that could be hinting at you being pre-diabetic

Your body often gives warning signs when something isn't working as it should be.

User austnutritioncentre took to TikTok to help warn people what changes to look out for if becoming ill with pre-diabetes. When you become insulin-resistant, also known as pre-diabetic, there are a number of symptoms that you might experience.

Skin tags, darker skin on flexures such as the neck, acne with large pores and greasy skin and excessive dark hair on the body may all be signs that you are pre-diabetic. The TikTok user explained the symptoms as "signs you’re going down the diabetes path".

The NHS website states: "Many more people have blood sugar levels above the normal range, but not high enough to be diagnosed as having diabetes. This is sometimes known as pre-diabetes. If your blood sugar level is above the normal range, your risk of developing full-blown diabetes is increased. It's very important for diabetes to be diagnosed as early as possible because it will get progressively worse if left untreated."

Diabetes UK said that at the moment 13.6 million people are at increased risk of type 2 diabetes in the UK. If you’ve been told you have prediabetes, this is a warning sign that you are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. However, with the right support up to 50% of cases of type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed.

The charity website states that to decrease your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes you should improve you diet. Here is what they suggest.

Foods to help reduce risk of Type 2 diabetes

  • Total fruit and veg intake (including specifically green leafy veg, blueberries, grapes and apples)
  • Wholegrains
  • Yogurt and cheese
  • Unsweetened tea and coffee

Food to avoid to reduce risk of Type 2 diabetes

  • Sugar sweetened drinks
  • Red and processed meats
  • Refined carbohydrates (like sugary snacks, white bread, sugary cereals)
  • Potatoes (particularly French fries)
