Music festivals are as staple to British culture as a proper cup of tea or discussing the weather – and when you do all three things at once, it is said that King Charles himself pops up to shake your hand.
Glastonbury dates back as far as 1970, while newer, but still iconic, Reading & Leads, Isle of Wight and Creamfields have become fixtures on the summer scene and are regarded as institutions in their own rights.
No matter your music taste, there is a festival to explore – and it’s not just the endless stream of weekend or day parties in the UK. The likes of Coachella, Primavera Sound and Burning Man attract hedonistic bon vivants looking to let their hair down to the backdrop of the biggest artists of the moment.
I, for one, have at least three in my calendar already. 2025 marks my seventh time at Glastonbury (apologies to those who struggle to get tickets!) and I am celebrating my 30th birthday at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound. I’ll also be dropping into All Points East – and will be easily convinced if I get a last-minute message about Gala, Field Day, Mighty Hoopla or Notting Hill Carnival.
And yet, each time the festival season rolls around, the sartorial panic begins. In my friendship group, we take our looks very seriously. Delivery people across the capital go into overdrive as my mates and I scramble to secure unique, eclectic creations with a more-is-more maximalist approach. Take it from someone who knows: it is always more fun to go all out. The more chaotically good, the better.
Which is why I have curated this edit – with the help of my festival-loving team – to aid you (and, let’s be honest, myself) in the search for visually exciting ensembles that will look equally at home in the Palm Springs desert as it will on Worthy Farm.
Top tip: for multiday festivals, it is always fun to select a theme with your friends. This not only narrows your search but looks great in pictures - and you can easily spot them in a crowd. Think space cowboys, rave fairies or cosmic clowns for inspiration.
