Youngster who stunned Scots airport passengers with Snow Patrol piano cover taught himself on You Tube

A young boy who stunned Scots airport passengers with a Snow Patrol piano cover taught himself the song by watching You Tube videos.

Talented youngster Liam O'Roarty received a standing ovation after his beautiful cover of Chasing Cars in the departure lounge of Edinburgh Airport on Tuesday, February 21.

The 11-year-old was travelling with dad Aaron, mum Fiona and brother Elliot, to Fuerteventura when he spotted the communal piano and his 'eyes lit up' before he treated fellow travellers to a few songs.

Aaron, 43, said the family, who are from Durham, are extremely proud of Liam and have been left astounded at the amazing response since video footage was posted online.

He told the Record: "Liam taught himself to play piano by watching YouTube and then he had some piano lessons but he went back to teaching himself.

"He taught himself the song he played at the airport after watching a YouTube video. It takes him a day or two but he sits down and learns it.

"As soon as we went into the departure lounge, he saw the piano and his eyes lit up. He wasn't going to play as he didn't think he was allowed but he played after I spoke to a member of staff who said it was okay.

"He has never played in front of a huge crowd before. We were gobsmacked and it was so amazing to see. He had a smile on his face all the way to Fuerteventura."

Liam said: "I wasn't really expecting to be on the news. I was a bit nervous at first playing in front of that many people - I even earned a tener after someone gave me spending money for playing.

"After I played and I got that round of applause I was fine."

The three-minute-long video of Liam playing was uploaded to TikTok, with thousands of people viewing the footage and commenting on it.

Travellers watching his performance can be heard saying in the background of the video saying: "He's amazing."

The footage shows the crowd erupt into applause after Chasing Cars, before they are treated to another song by Liam.

Aaron added: "We are very proud parents. It is amazing that he has picked all of this up by watching YouTube videos. Now he has a taste for it, he might do it again in the future.

"It has really opened our eyes, he has the confidence and the skill but seeing him in that environment was a different league altogether.

"The comments we have been getting on social media have been unreal. A lot of people have said it made them cry. We are so proud."
