Gotham FC, a prominent team in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), has made headlines by signing 13-year-old forward McKenna “Mak” Whitham to a three-year contract. This move makes Whitham the youngest player ever to sign with an NWSL team.

The contract, effective from January 1, 2025, includes a National Team Replacement contract, allowing Whitham to be eligible for selection in upcoming matches during international windows. Whitham, who will turn 14 on July 2, impressed Gotham FC during the 2024 pre-season as a non-roster invitee and notably scored the game-winning goal in a match against Deportivo Cali.

Whitham, a Southern California resident, has trained with various clubs, including the Kansas City Current, Washington Spirit, and Los Angeles FC 2010 boys academy team. She also boasts a successful youth career with clubs like Slammers FC HB Køge and SC Blue Heat.

Gotham FC's General Manager and Head of Soccer Operations expressed excitement about Whitham's signing, emphasizing the club's commitment to supporting her growth as both a player and an individual. Head Coach Juan Carlos Amorós highlighted Whitham's hard work and the significance of this opportunity for her and the club.

While the NWSL regular season is on a break for the Olympics, Gotham FC is set to participate in the Summer Cup. If Whitham debuts for the club in the upcoming match against the Washington Spirit, she will become the youngest player to feature in a first-division soccer match in the United States.

Despite these positive developments, the NWSL has faced challenges related to workplace culture and misconduct. Recent incidents, including the firing of a General Manager and concerns raised by former employees, underscore the ongoing need for a safe and healthy environment within the league.

As the NWSL continues to evolve and expand, addressing issues of misconduct and prioritizing player well-being remain critical for the league's growth and reputation.
