Young Perth curlers reach final of the Scottish Schools Championships

A team of young Fair City curlers received top marks for their performance at the Scottish Schools Championships.

Arran Thomson, Lewis McCabe and Sam McConnachie proudly represented Perth Academy at the Curl Aberdeen event over the weekend.

And the talented trio navigated all the way through to the final on Sunday before being edged out by in-form Stewarton Academy.

“I think they were just playing phenomenally,” Arran (17) said. “We were just outplayed.”

The Perth team had booked their showdown spot thanks to a dramatic last-end 6-5 victory against High School of Dundee, which followed on from a strong round-robin display.

“It was a brilliant start to the tournament and we adjusted to the ice really quickly,” continued Arran. "The ice was brilliant and really nice to play on.

“In the semi-final, the first and second ends went well, but then it slipped a wee bit.

“In the fifth end we were trying to get a multiple to get ahead and have the advantage.

“But I was a wee bit tight and light with my last shot and ended up knocking their stone in for a one.

“We knew we had a lot of work in the last end. Sam and Lewis played a perfect game. It just came down to me to make the last shot to get a three.”

The team could take plenty of positives away from the weekend and now look forward to finishing the season strongly.

Arran said: “It’s nice to be able to represent the school and is always good fun.”

And he added: “We’ve still got a tournament in Forfar left so we hope a good performance there will set us up for next year.

“We’ll then push hard in the U21s where we’ll try to keep ourselves qualifying into finals.

“We’re all from the same school so interact with each other every day. We’ll stick together and keep playing."
