Young man fell 600ft from Snowdonia peak

A 23-year-old man died after falling from a peak in Snowdonia national park, an inquest opening has heard. Jack Carne, from Barnsley in south Yorkshire, died after falling six hundred feet from the mountain when his handhold broke.

The young builder suffered multiple injuries following the incident on Saturday, February 4, at Y Gribin in the Glyderau, NorthWalesLive reports. His friends, who were rescued by Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team, raised the alarm.

Mr Carne was found by the rescuers but due to poor weather conditions his body could not be recovered until the following day, the hearing was told. You can get more local news and other story updates straight to your inbox by subscribing to our newsletters here.

John Gittins, senior coroner for North Wales east and central, said Mr Carne suffered "multiple crush injuries". He was with two friends at the time of the fall as they made their way to the summit of Glyder Fawr from Llyn Ogwen.

Friends paid tribute to Mr Carne, describing him as a “true gentleman” and the "nicest lad you'll ever meet" after a fundraiser was set up in his memory. The fundraiser, which you can find here, will be used to support his family. A full inquest will take place later this year.

His grandmother has also thanked the rescue teams on social media, saying: "A massive thank you to all involved risking your own lives to help my grandson and his friends, we are all heartbroken beyond words. You will be forever in my heart and thoughts Jack my beautiful grandson."
