Young man dies after train collides with two people in Meath

A young man has tragically died after a train collided with him and another man last night.

The two men were struck by the Connolly to Belfast Lanyon service in the Gormanston area of Meath. The accident occurred just before 9.30pm when the two men tried to cross the tracks, a source said.

The second man was injured in the incident and recived treatment at the scene. A garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí and emergency services attended an incident on the train line in the Gormanstown area of Co. Meath yesterday evening, Wednesday 14th September 2022.

"Shortly before 9.30pm, a train collided with two men. One of these men, aged in his 20s, received treatment but was later pronounced deceased. His body has since been removed from the scene and taken to Navan mortuary."

She added: "A second man received treatment at the scene for his injuries."

Irish Rail's northern commuter service was shut down due to the incident last night. They tweeted: "20:50 Connolly to Belfast Lanyon has struck a person near Gormanston.

"Line expected to remain closed for some time. Northern commuter services operating to & from Balbriggan only. Efforts currently being made to source bus transfers north of Balbriggan."
