Young Leeds United fan goes viral after Sean McGurk's 'kind' gesture

An eight-year-old boy’s year has already been made after his favourite Leeds United player Sean McGurk’s kind gesture.

Henry Mackey was among the thousands who went to watch the Whites under-23 play against Liverpool at Elland Road last night (Monday).

He was joined by his mum Lucy Doherty, her partner and her partner's son who try to attend as many Leeds games as they can.

Over Christmas, they had missed a few games due to the cancellations caused by the pandemic.

However, after they defeated Liverpool 3-0, Henry, who plays for Guiseley AFC Juniors, waited after the game to get a picture with Sean but got more than he could have ever imagined.

His mum Lucy shared a video of the interaction between Sean and Henry on Twitter and it has since gone viral.

“We go to as many Leeds games as we can really,” she said. “He missed some games which had been cancelled but we thought we would take him.

“We thought we would wait afterwards to take a picture with Sean, he got his picture taken and signed his match tickets. He said come to the car I’ve got a surprise for him and he gave him the pair of boots he had.

“Henry's elated obviously, the social media its gone mad. He came out of school and started running around when I showed him the post. He’s over the moon.”

Henry, who aspires to play for Leeds United in the future, told his mum his year has already been made following the kind and generous gesture.

Henry followed in his grandad's footsteps in supporting Leeds United. Sadly, he died a few years ago, and it has strengthened Henry's support for Leeds as it has also become a way of remembering his way of remembering him.

Lucy added: “It’s so nice and I’m overwhelmed myself, we weren’t expecting to go to the game and come back with a pair of boots and the response from Leeds supporters.

“He’s his favourite under 23’s player ever since we’ve been taking him to the under 23 games. He’s like a superfan but I think last night has massively increased that.

“I don’t know him personally but he seems like a lovely young man who has been brought up well.

“It’s not just him giving us a generous gift to Henry, he’s being a good role model. He’s only young himself so it's nice to see something positive. You hear a lot of negative things in the press about footballers so it's nice to see something that's positive.”
