Young Irishman dead after battle with meningitis named as HSE warns of symptoms

A young man who tragically lost his life after a battle with meningitis has been named as a community deals with the untimely loss of "young lad with a love of life".

Seamus Langan of Aughrane, Ballygar, known as Seamie to friends and family, tragically died on Wednesday 5 October after a short battle with illness - GalwayBeo reports.

As Séamie battled meningitis, nearby Kiltoom Parish asked that parishioners offer prayers for the stricken 18-year-old over the weekend.

However, Seamus died at Portiuncula University Hospital in Ballinasloe on Wednesday leaving a community "shook to its core".

St. Brendan's GAA summed up the feeling around the parish and led the tributes.

"Our community was shook to its core yesterday with the news that it has lost Seamie Langan at such a very young age

"When life should only be beginning to take off for Séamie, it was taken from him."

St. Brendan's GAA continued "A strong, young lad with a love for life, devilment and farming, to be gone so soon is shocking."

The club sent their deepest and heartfelt sympathies to his parents and siblings, his extended family and his many friends.

Ballygar Hurling Club echoed the words of St. Brendan's, expressing the "shock and sadness" felt by the community.

"Words cannot describe the shock and sadness that the entire community is experiencing today due to the sudden and untimely passing of Seamus Langan," they said.

Thursday evening's Galway Minor Football Quarter-Final tie between St. Brendan's GAA and Milltown was called off due to the tragic loss and as a mark of respect to the young man and his family.
