Young Hamilton bookworms celebrate Silver Reading Award

Little bookworms in Lanarkshire are celebrating after achieving their Silver Reading Schools Award.

Neilsland Primary's P3 pupils are now going for Gold through a number of activities at the Hamilton school.

Their accolades come after a number of creative ideas to encourage leisurely reading such as torchlight book clubs after school, organising a whole school 'Reading River' in the corridor, creating Reading Forests and Book Nooks within the school and breakfast book clubs.

On Wednesday, September 21, the children celebrated their fantastic achievement by hosting a special event at the school where a great turnout of parents, grandparents and siblings came along to cheer the success of the youngsters.

During the celebration afternoon, families joined the kids to read together at the Listening Tree set up outside, and they created another Reading River in the playground, before participating in reading-based games and activities with their children in the class, with plenty of refreshments for all to enjoy.

Each class in the school have two 'Reading Champions' who take part in meetings and come up with new ways to inspire the children to read as much as possible.

Every day each class has 10 minutes of DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) that the teachers join in with as well to encourage reading for pleasure.

Now as the pupils go for their Gold Award, Hamilton residents should keep their eyes out for posters, as well as Neilsland boys and girls out and about reading and book quotes on the pavements.

Principal Teacher Carolyn Brock said: "It was lovely to have our families in school with us to celebrate our achievement.

"Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to get together to enjoy reading and sharing stories. We are looking forward to working with our families and school communities to continue to promote reading for pleasure both in school and at home."

And class teacher Rebecca May added: "Everyone at Neilsland has worked so hard to earn our Silver Reading Schools Award, and it was fantastic to be able to welcome families into the school to showcase everyone's hard work and share our love of reading."
