Young girl told she 'couldn't play with anyone at school because of her ginger hair'

A red-haired schoolgirl has spoken out about her life with ginger hair.

Ellie Powles, 11, revealed that a number of older people had given her compliments about her lovely locks.

However, sadly, the West Yorkshire girl has also had to put up with name-calling and feeling excluded from activities, as reported by Yorkshire Live.

Ellie said: "I am 11 years old and a redhead living in West Yorkshire.

"The article asks what life is like as a redhead and my response is I have not experienced much physical abuse however I was told that I could not play with anyone (at a previous school) because of my hair colour.

"And once in my class, a boy called me a ginger-headed freckle face weirdo which made me feel upset.

"However, I tend to find the attention I receive more positive.

"If you are young and ginger you get attention from the old folk saying ''oh I love your hair or ''I remember when I had hair like that" which makes me feel special."

Ellie's mum Charlotte said her daughter had felt excluded at a previous school as she had wanted to play football but had come up against some opposition.

Charlotte said the abuse given to redheads amounted to 'discrimination' and wasn't fair.

Ellie's brother Thomas, 14, who has his ginger hair in a ponytail, has also received negative comments about his hair colour. He said it didn't really bother him as he'd learned to live with it.

Thomas added: "I am proud of my ginger hair."

And dad Michael - whose ginger hair has now faded to grey - said he had also been taunted when he was at school.

"I was called ginger nut, Tango man, carrot top - all of it."

Michael said he had warned Ellie and Thomas that they might be called names and advised them to "turn the other cheek".
