Young Edinburgh man dies after being hit by car on busy bypass during early hours

A pedestrian has died after being hit by a car on the Edinburgh bypass in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police closed the A720 near Striation for several hours after the incident and have now confirmed that a 25-year-old male was sadly pronounced dead at the scene of the collision.

The driver of the vehicle involved, a 39-year-old male in a BMW three series, was uninjured. The road eventually opened at 12:40pm after officers and forensics investigated at the scene.

A major diversion was in place for drivers surrounding the junction, with Traffic Scotland warning motorists to avoid the area. Several motorists took to social media to say that had been waiting in queues of up to two hours to make their way around the incident on the busy carriageway.

Sergeant Barry Sommerville of Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friend at this difficult time.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and I would ask anyone with information which could help to get in touch.

“We would also be keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam footage which could help our investigation.

“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting reference 0714 of 3 September.”
