Young dad threatened by loan shark and sent troubling messages before taking own life

A young dad took his own life after he was threatened by a loan shark over £1,000.

Cain Dutton, from Preston, was rushed to the Royal Preston Hospital after he was found unconscious on March 15.

The 26-year-old was resuscitated, but he went into cardiac arrest the following day and was pronounced dead at 3pm on March 17.

Cain, who had bipolar disorder, reportedly received threatening texts from a loan shark, the inquest at Preston Coroner's Court heard today.

He also told his family he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, but no medical records relating to this were discovered after his death.

A CT scan found no signs of cancer, LancsLive reports.

Dad Alan said in a statement to the coroner that his son was "generally happy" but did suffer with his mental health occasionally.

In 2019, he had been prescribed antidepressants after an overdose of cocaine and ketamine.

A report from his GP confirmed he hadn't been taking his prescription before his death.

Cain's dad said: "He said he didn't need medication; he said his son and his partner were the best medication.

"I spoke to Cain on March 15, we had a good laugh, and he asked if I could send him some money for some food.

"Less than an hour later I had a call from my other son who explained what Cain had done to himself."

The inquest heard that Cain had been in debt and he and his partner occasionally went without food so they could feed other members of the family.

In a statement, Sophie's mum Alison Brown described Cain as "like a son to me".

She said: "Sophie and Cain had been together for three years and they have a one-year-old son.

"On March 14 my daughter was staying over with me to help me. Cain had come round with his teenage sisters and he took them home and put them to bed.

"Cain seemed fine, very normal, laughing and joking and I gave him a lift home at 2am on Tuesday, March 15.

"I got some messages in the early hours asking about doing something nice for Sophie, I suggested a break away and said I would look after their son.

"At 8am I woke up and looked at my phone and he had sent more messages about giving Sophie and their son a big kiss.

"He sent another message about how he couldn't carry on and was sorry and how I had filled the void.

"He said 'I'll watch over you all' and 'I'm going to be with mum'.

"I woke up Sophie and said 'I think Cain is talking about killing himself'.

"He messaged saying 'it's done, it's over'. Sophie logged into a camera they had to keep an eye on the dog and the dog was barking.

"She thought she heard someone say 'Cain is dead'."

Lee Gardner, Cain's friend who found him unresponsive, described him as "a lovely lad" and "a decent guy".

Returning a conclusion of suicide Assistant Coroner Laura Nash said: "It seems that Cain had some difficulties relating to his finances.

"There were some messages that suggested suicidal ideation and that he was going to take his own life.

"He wanted his feelings of love to be passed to his partner and his son.

"His partner checked the camera and saw what appears to be the aftermath of Lee Gardner finding Mr Dutton."
