Young dad stabbed to death in broad daylight in Kilkenny named

Gardai were questioning a suspect last night — after this young dad was stabbed to death in broad daylight on a busy street.

And sources have said that gardai believe Johnny ‘Dankys’ Cash — who was just 40 — knew his killer.

“He and a fella he knew had a row in the street and it quickly escalated and the deceased was stabbed,” a source said last night.

Mr Cash, who was a well-known member of the Travelling community, was stabbed as he walked in the centre of Kilkenny yesterday afternoon

It’s understood he was attacked during a row on Hebron Road in the city at approximately 12.45pm.

The victim, who had a young family and lived in Ballyragget, 17 kms from the scene of the stabbing, suffered serious injuries.

He was rushed to the nearby St Luke’s Hospital but lost his fight for life shortly after arrival.

Gardai were quickly on the scene and arrested a man in his 20s who was known to Mr Cash. He was being questioned at Kilkenny Garda Station last night.

Detectives can hold him for 24 hours before he must either be charged or released.

Gardai last night appealed for witnesses to come forward.

A spokesman said: “Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the fatal assault of a man that occurred on Hebron Road, Kilkenny. Gardaí attended the scene of the incident at approximately 12.45pm.

“A man, aged in his 40s, was discovered with serious injuries.

“He was taken to St. Luke’s General Hospital where he has passed away.

“A male, aged in his late 20s, was arrested at the scene and taken to Kilkenny Garda Station where he is currently detained.”
