Young Co Down GAA star to undergo life-changing spinal surgery next month

A young GAA player from Clonduff in Co Down will travel to Turkey in the New Year in order to undergo life-changing spinal surgery.

Ollie Farrell, who is nine years old, was diagnosed with juvenile scoliosis when he was just three.

The incurable progressive condition causes an abnormal twisting and curvature of the spine. In Ollie’s case, his curve has rapidly progressed to the point where he now requires urgent spinal surgery.

The only option for treatment on the NHS would be spinal fusion surgery, which would mean Ollie would be unable to bend his back.

His parents, Darren and Sarah, have researched alternative options and met with specialists in Turkey earlier this month. They’ve recommended sliding rods as the best option for Ollie and he is set to undergo the first part of his treatment on Tuesday, January 3.

The cost of the surgery alone is €40,000 and the family have set up a Gofundme page in order to help with the cost of Ollie’s treatment.

Described as “football mad” by his mum Sarah, Ollie plays for Clonduff and is also a huge Manchester United fan.

His family have thanked all those who have contributed to their fundraising efforts so far, especially the local GAA community in Co Down.

Sarah Farrell told Belfast Live: “Darren, I, and Ollie's whole family are all overwhelmed with the fundraising.

“We never expected the response we have received, the number of people calling to the house, ringing, and texting with kind wishes and prayers.

“We appreciate every single donation and supportive message. The GAA community far and wide has been amazing , especially our local clubs Clonduff and Rostrevor. We will never forget the generosity people have shown us.

“We travel to Turkey after Christmas for Ollie to receive surgery on January 3. He has a long road ahead.

“We have to travel to Turkey for regular follow-ups, and Ollie will have to have more surgery in the future. But we are thankful for everyone's help to give him this opportunity.”
