You've been using your hairbrush wrong - and it could be causing split ends

If you're blessed with luscious locks, brushing your hair is most likely something you've nailed down as part of your daily routine.

Whether you do it every morning, before you go to bed, or only when your hair is wet, we all have our way of doing it - and even different tools for the job.

But it turns out, despite thinking we're detangling our hair, most of us are using our hairbrushes all wrong, according to a certified trichologist.

Taylor Rose, who 'helps women regrow their hair', has more than 1million followers on her TikTok account @thehealthyhur, where she shares her best tips and tricks.

Recently, the hair and scalp specialist took to the platform to share "three hair mistakes you had no idea you were making".

According to the expert, one of the main mistakes were making, which is damaging our hair, is using the wrong type of hairbrush.

Speaking in the clip, Taylor explained: "Different types of hair require different types of brushes to keep your strands healthy.

Those with long, straight hair might want to use a paddle brush, which can cover a lot of ground quickly while smoothing it, according to Healthline.

Meanwhile, if you also have thick hair, you mixed want a mixed bristle brush, which can stimulate the scalp while also detangling the rest of the hair.

If you have fine, thinning or ageing hair, a boar bristle brush could be a good choice for you, because it has the ability to redistribute the natural, healthy oils in the scalp, making your locks shiny.

For those with curly hair, a sturdy, wide-toothed comb in the shower might be beneficial, as it can prevent frizz and breakage.

Brushing your hair incorrectly can lead to split ends, so it's important to firstly use the right brush, and not brush from the top of your head down.

Instead, explains Taylor, you should "brush starting at your ends and moving up". She added: "This allows you to tackle tangles along the hair shaft without damage". Then you can start to move to the top of the hair.
