Wordle spin-off games: Quordle, Heardle, Lewdle, Moviedle, Taylordle and more

Since Wordle first launched in October, it quickly became an Internet sensation, attracting millions of daily players who desperately try to guess a new five-letter word each day in no more than six attempts.

However, the addictive word game now has a number of new spin-offs, including Quordle, which is even more challenging than its predecessor, and Crosswordle, which is dubbed as a cross between Wordle and Sudoku.

But Wordle has inspired a variety of games--and they’re not all word puzzles. There’s Heardle, which challenges music fans to guess a song in seconds, and Worldle, which presents players with the outline of a country.

Quordle

Quordle is a spin-off based on the concept of the original, and the same principles apply - each letter changes green if it’s in the right place or yellow if it’s included in the word but not in the right place, and grey if it is not included in the word at all.

However, there is a twist - instead of guessing one five-letter word, players have to guess four words simultaneously. Players have nine tries to solve all four five-letter words, and each guess appears in all four fields.

Lewdle

As suggested in the name, Lewdle is a word game similar to Wordle, except the right answer will always be naughty.

Lewdle is about clean but dirty fun, and crucially, Lewdle won’t go into slurs. The developers want the game to be dirty without actually being offensive to anyone. According to Lewdle’s content advisory, they say: “Lewdle is a game about rude words. If you’re likely to be offended by the use of profanity, vulgarity or obscenity, go play Wordle instead!”

Players have six attempts to guess a mystery five-letter word. Like Wordle, they can both only be played once per day.

Dordle

Dordle was inspired by Wordle but was the precursor to Quordle. Its rules are the same as Wordle, but instead of one word, players have to guess two words simultaneously.

It’s more challenging than Wordle, but not quite as tough as Quordle.

Semantle

Semantle challenges players to guess the word or short phrase of the day by guessing words that get closer and closer to the right word’s meaning.

Unlike Wordle, the game isn’t about spelling, but about the semantics, or the word’s meaning.

Heardle

Heardle is the song guessing game that challenges players to name the song after listening to just a second of its intro.

If the player guesses wrong or wants to skip a guess, they get to listen to another second (and up to six seconds–and up to six guesses) until they get it right.

There’s also a Harry Styles Heardle with the same rules as above, but the song will always be by Harry Styles.

Worldle

Worldle is the daily game for geography buffs. Each day, players are presented with an outline of a country or a territory, and they’ll get six guesses as to the mystery location.

With each guess, Worldle will tell players how close they are, and in which direction the right country is from their guess.

Crosswordle

Crosswordle is a cross between Wordle and Sudoku, where players are presented with the correct word and have to work backwards.

Players are challenged with placing the correct letters in both the right and  wrong positions, to imitate a game of Wordle but played in reverse.

Moviedle

Moviedle sees players watch a one second version of a film before guessing what it is. If they’re stuck or guess incorrectly, they’ll watch a longer and slower version, and will have six guesses to get it right.

Posterdle

Movie buffs will also enjoy Posterdle, which shows players a pixelated image of a movie poster that gradually becomes clearer over 20 seconds.

The aim of the game is to guess the film as quickly as possible, before the title is revealed.

Taylordle

This one’s for Taylor Swift fans. Taylordle is a Wordle spin-off, but all the words will be related to Taylor Swift.

Words will be between four and eight letters long, and are often related to her song lyrics.

Factle

Factle is perfect for trivia fans. Players will be presented with a question, of which there are five right answers in a specific order–but more than 20 possible answers.

Factle players will need to not only guess the right five answers, but place them in the correct order too.

Redactle

Redactle takes a random Wikipedia article and redacts all the important words. Players are challenged to guess the words that have been redacted in order to decipher the text to reveal the subject of the Wikipedia article.

Flaggle

Flaggle challenges players to guess a country or territory’s flag within as few tries as possible. Players will enter the name of any country, and Flaggle will show them how similar that flag’s colours are to the right answer.

Foodle

Foodies will love Foodle--the word guessing game with the same rules as Wordle, but the answer is always a food item or food brand.

Tradle

As its name implies, Tradle is all about learning about trade. Created by the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC), the game helps users learn about various exports between countries.

Each round, people must guess based on the different exports which country it comes from.
