'You deserved to say goodbye' - Bruno Fernandes has say on David De Gea Manchester United exit

Bruno Fernandes believes David de Gea deserved an official send off in front of the Manchester United fans after his exit was confirmed on Saturday.

De Gea was released last weekend upon the expiry of his contract, but uncertainty over his future continued to grow. The 32-year-old confirmed in an emotional statement on Saturday that he would not sign a new deal, calling time on his 12-year spell at Old Trafford.

A number of United players sent their best wises to the Spanish international, but Fernandes seemed to hint at disappointment regarding how the goalkeeper's exit was managed.

Alongside a picture of the pair holding the Carabao Cup, the midfielder wrote on Instagram: "You deserved to say goodbye at the stadium with all the fans cheering you for all the beautiful memories."

And in a second post, he added: "You made history at the club and your name will never be forgotten, and that no one can’t take away from you (clapping emoji). All the best for what’s coming for you and your family."

De Gea's exit has been somewhat unceremonious, particularly after making a club-record 545 appearances for a goalkeeper. Months of discussions over a new deal never materialised into anything concrete, with the club wanting to lower his £375,000-per-week wages but unable to find middle ground.

United sources insist no contract was ever formally offered to the 32-year-old, despite reports suggesting the goalkeeper had signed terms only for them to be withdrawn. Manager Erik ten Hag is already well under way in sourcing a replacement, with the club in advanced negotiations with Inter Millan over Andre Onana. Two bids have already been knocked back for the 27-year-old but there is growing optimism among all involved to get a deal over the line.
