'You clown' - Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville in spat over Cristiano Ronaldo Manchester United transfer decision

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville engaged in their latest Twitter spat on Saturday evening after news emerged that Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly handed in a transfer request at Manchester United.

Ronaldo is said to have expressed his desire to leave United following a hugely disappointing season for Neville's former club. Despite the Portuguese icon scoring 27 goals in 37 games following his return to Old Trafford, the Red Devils failed to qualify for the Champions League and finished sixth, 44 points behind Carragher's former club Liverpool, who were pipped to the title by Manchester City.

United endured their worst Premier League campaign in history - with their fewest points, fewest wins and most goals conceded in a season. And now Ronaldo, who was wanted by City before re-signing for the Red Devils, has reportedly requested to leave the club, amid a desire to play Champions League football for the final few years of his career.

And Carragher, still fresh from the fantastic news for Liverpool fans that talisman Mohamed Salah had signed a new contract at the club after much speculation, was quick to make his views known and stick the boot in on Untied.

He tweeted: "Ronaldo did exactly what I thought he would do, score goals but make the team worse. The transfer request also kills the idea he turned down Man City because of his love for Man United."

However, Neville wasn’t happy with Carragher’s tweet and hit back, dismissing the claims and firing a cheap shot at the Reds in response.

He replied: "I get it, you're full of yourselves but he can turn down City for United because he likes them more and still want to leave this summer. He left before but still loved the club. Enjoy Saturday night and your short period of success."

Carragher was not letting up however and ridiculed Neville’s argument along with his excitement at Ronaldo returning last summer. He said: “City didn't want him you [clown] and you're the same fella who kept saying it was like Elvis had arrived in Manchester. Elvis has left the building."

Neville looked to end the spat there and just replied: “Little less conversation."

Both Carragher and Neville, while two of the most recognisable pundits in the game, are known for winding each other up. The feud over Ronaldo comes after their earlier goading after Salah extended his contract with the Reds.

Neville had claimed that Salah had ‘played them’ when referring to Liverpool and their fans. Carragher then replied by sending Neville a tweet of Salah watching the clip where the former right-back said, ‘Salah will leave, he will, I can absolutely guarantee it’, while he also mocked United's scouting network after they continue to be linked with current or former Ajax players.

Regarding Ronaldo, it remains to be seen where the forward ends up. Italian clubs Roma and Juventus are reportedly interested while new Chelsea owner and de facto sporting director Todd Boehly reportedly met up with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes in Portugal last week. The Red Devils, however, are expected to remain firm and do not want their star man to leave this summer.
