'You can't play' - Paulo Di Canio makes bizarre Thiago Alcantara and Liverpool jibe

Jurgen Klopp made a tactical mistake in his team selection for Liverpool's 1-0 home defeat to Inter Milan in the Champions League, according to Paulo Di Canio.

The Nerazzurri left Anfield with a 1-0 away win thanks to a brilliant second half strike from Lautaro Martinez, but with a 2-0 advantage from the first leg, it was the Reds who advance to the quarterfinal stage, 2-1 on aggregate.

However, former Premier League star Di Canio insists that Jurgen Klopp made a tactical error by starting midfielders Thiago and Curtis Jones against Simone Inzaghi's side.

Speaking to Sky Italia after the match, Di Canio said: “Liverpool did not win 5-0 in the first leg. Tonight, they tried to manage by playing with a midfield that underestimated the strength of Inter.

“In fact, (Klopp) made the first two changes there, even if it is true that he also makes them in the Premier League.

“You can’t play with Curtis Jones, who is a reliable kid, along with two more experienced ones. And Thiago Alcantara, who's not suitable for Klopp’s game.”

Both Thiago and Jones were replaced by Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita with 25 minutes to play.

The changes came after Martinez had given Inter the lead, quickly followed by the dismissal of Alexis Sanchez for a second yellow card, an incident which Di Canio conceded was the turning point in the match.

“Sanchez sinks (Inter with red card.) A player so experienced must know,” he added.

Liverpool must now wait to learn who they will face in the quarterfinal of the Champions League, with six ties still to be settled.

The quarterfinal draw will take place on Friday, March 18 at 11am UK time.

At this stage, there are no further seedings in the draw and teams from the same country can now face each other.

The quarter-final matches are scheduled to take place on April 5 & 6 for the first legs, with the second legs to be held on April 12 & 13.
