You can stay in majestic castle near Edinburgh for under £100 a night

In a matter of days, thousands of visitors and performers are set to pour into the city for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe's 75th anniversary.

All the eyes of the world will once more be on the capital, with the global arts event returning in full for the first time in two years, after being heavily hampered by covid.

Of course, many people due to spend this summer in the city will have already booked their hotels - likely months in advance to avoid paying a hefty price.

And for people looking for an overnight stay with a difference, there's somewhere on the outskirts of the city that provides a bit more majesty than your usual accommodation.

Although the words 'Edinburgh' and 'castle' are likely to conjure up the obvious image (and we'd love to spend an overnight there too), there's a stunning castle just outside the city you can check into for under £100 a night - at the right time of the year.

The award-winning four-star Melville Castle, just a shorty journey from Dalkeith, boasts 'Scottish grandeur with many original touches', with 33 'unique' bedrooms and suites.

Owners say: "After a long day of exploring all the beauty Edinburgh has to offer, bed down beneath the turrets for deep slumber.

"Home to 33 recently revamped bedrooms and suites, Melville Castle is the perfect place to treat yourself to some well-deserved R&R - Refined Relaxation. Our dramatically designed, ornate bedrooms are complete with crisp linen sheets, fluffy towels and magical views of the grounds."

Meanwhile, it's a popular spot for food and drink too, with many locals popping by for 'delicious' meals, while their Library Bar is a place where 'Old Fashioneds never go out of fashion.'

The 18th Century castle comes with quite the history too, having been commissioned by the first Viscount Melville way back in 1791.

Melville Castle Hotel gets positive feedback on booking.com (8.5/10), Google (4.4/5) and TripAdvisor too (4/5), with guests hailing 'an amazing stay and dining experience', 'A truly wonderful and memorable experience', while adding the property is - perhaps unsurprisingly - 'full of character'.

Yet despite its various attractions, a castle stay might not break the bank. When we looked for prices of midweek breaks on TripAdvisor, we found a night's stay for as little as £80 - we can't guarantee it'll be quite as low as that come August.
