You can now explore Swansea's grim, gruesome and debauched side on a new walking tour

A new walking tour in Swansea promises to teach people about the city's darkest secrets of 'murder, superstitions, debauchery and ghosts that lurk in every alleyway'. Swansea In Gloom is a new 90 minute attraction that will tell some of the most gruesome stories from the city's past.

It has been established by HQ Urban Kitchen Cafe, which is within the old police station along Alexandra Road, and spotted an opportunity to tell people all about tales from the city's history which many will never have heard before, giving a new perspective to buildings and locations they walk past every day.

Creator of Swansea In Gloom, Gareth Willis Falco, explained how it was hoped that a similar ghost tour experience could be created in the city like the one which takes place in Edinburgh. Get Swansea stories straight to your inbox with our newsletter.

Mr Willis Falco said: "Just from being here and having our cafe here, you can see the history around us with all the lovely old buildings that run along Alexandra Road. It is quite rare in Swansea to see so many buildings relatively unaffected by The Blitz.

"We're effectively in the old town of Swansea, so why not start telling the stories of where we are? I started talking to some local people with significant knowledge of the area, and from speaking to them, we managed to put together a number of really interesting and also sometimes grim and gruesome and ghostly stories of the area that really made us think we could do something similar to the ghost tours they do in Edinburgh."

An advertisement for the ghost tour reads: "Join Swansea In Gloom’s chief storyteller on a walking tour through the olde town and beyond. Learn about Swansea’s darkest secrets of murder, superstitions, debauchery and ghosts that lurk in every alleyway, as we unearth stories from the medieval past up until the mid 20th Century. You won’t see the city the same way again after you’ve heard these tales, as Olde Swansea is raised from the ashes of history.

"The Swansea In Gloom walking tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and covers just over one mile of gruesome tales. The walk starts and finishes in Llys Glas (The Old Police Station) at HQ Urban Kitchen Café/Bar.

"A small donation from each tour will be made to Matt’s Café, a site of important historical interest, and now doing amazing work to help people in need. Swansea In Gloom is run as part of a non-profit organisation, aiming to improve the places we live with small local initiatives including Swansea Library of Things and HQ Urban Kitchen Cafe/Bar. Disclaimer: Some guests may find the content and locations distressing."

If you would like to book a spot on a walking tour, you can do so by clicking here. It is for those aged 15 and over. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.
