A rugged landscape providing the backdrop to one of the darkest Harry Potter film scenes has been named the best walk in Britain.
Rugged Malham Cove in North Yorkshire hosted a parting of the ways for the three leading characters – Harry, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger – in the Deathly Hallows Part One.
It is also the most magical place for a stroll, scoring 89 out of 100 and five stars for its breathtaking scenery in a poll by consumer watchdog Which?
Boasting curved cliffs leading up to a cracked limestone pavement at Malham Cove, it beat two Cornwall walks – the Botallack Mine walk and Lizard Peninsula circuit – into joint second with 88 points each.
The “challenging” seven-mile Lizard trek won five stars for its scenery and wildlife such as rare red-billed chough birds and basking sharks.
The Lake District was the most popular area for high-quality hikes, claiming six spots in the table of 51 walks.
The Peak District, Cornwall and Northumberland each had three of the best.
Dorset, the North Yorkshire Moors Snowdonia, London and Surrey and had two each.
Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, said: “The UK has an amazing variety of walks.”
