Yorkshire CCC reaches agreement with former coach Andrew Gale over sacking

Yorkshire County Cricket Club have reached an agreement with former coach Andrew Gale after the ex-captain was sacked by the club last December. Gale was relieved of his duties by the club following the findings of the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal.

Gale - amongst a number of other prominent club figures - were referenced by Rafiq in the report into institutional racism within Yorkshire CCC and the county cricket system. This led to the 38-year-old losing his job, along with 14 members of his backroom staff.

Nine months on, Gale has now reached an agreement which sees him take a 'six-figure compensation package' according to a report in the Daily Mail.

Yorkshire confirmed the agreement themselves in an official club statement, with former bowling coach Richard Pyrah also involved in a settlement deal.

The statement said: "“On the 3 December 2021 the Yorkshire County Cricket Club Limited took the decision to dismiss its coaching and medical staff.

“The club has acknowledged that its dismissals of that group of employees was procedurally unfair. After meaningful dialogue between the club and the legal advisers acting on behalf of Andrew Gale and Richard Pyrah, the parties can confirm that acceptable terms of settlement have been reached.

“The financial terms of the settlements are confidential and no further public statement will be made about the terms.” Gale has remained almost silent in the months that followed his sacking, apart from making a statement where he categorically denied all accusations made against him.

A snippet of the 3,500 statement read: "I deny each and every allegation that Azeem raised with YCCC and then via the ECB suggesting that I have used racist language and bullied Azeem.

"I was originally stunned but I am now angry that he has raised such allegations against me. My differences of opinion with him only related to cricket matters and not race or religion."
