Drinkers planning a boozy night out can make their cash go further in Telford where pubs serve up the cheapest pint in Britain for £2.60, a study has revealed.
It found the top 10 best-value-for money places to sip a pint were dominated by the north with Gloucester the only southern city or town to make the list, sharing tenth place with Stoke-on-Trent with an average price of £3.17.
Middlesbrough, Bolton, Bradford and Aberdeen shared the second spot with £2.84, followed by Kingston-upon-Hull with £2.93, Wolverhampton with £3.05 and Blackpool and Peterborough where a pint costs an average of £3.07.
Unsurprisingly, London was the most expensive for a bevvy with an average price of £4.97.
Blackpool was found to have the best selection of bars with Bolton taking second place and Plymouth third.
While Shropshire town Telford near UK landmark Ironbridge was top of the hops for beer prices, York was named the best overall for a night on the tiles because of its historic pubs, feeling of being safe and “diverse and interesting nightlife that has something for everyone”.
But Coventry was the worst place for painting the town red, scoring just 2.16 out of 10, with Slough, Berks also at the foot of the table with 2.89.
According to the research by website Get Licensed, revellers lacked peace of mind when going out in both places as they were anxious about their safety late at night.
The survey to compile the Night Out Index was based on factors including the number of bars, pubs and clubs per 100,000 people, cost of a pint, worries about being mugged or a victim of hate crime and feeling of safety when walking alone at night.
A Get Licensed spokesperson said: “British towns and cities vary wildly when it comes to safety.
“While all of the best nightlife venues have ample staff and door supervisors, all with the appropriate training and SIA licences, safety is still an important factor that many of us consider when planning a night out in town.”
