An attempt at sarcasm by Times Now group editor Navika Kumar on her primetime show went wrong when she met her match in a panelist on Monday.
Wading into the language controversy, the Newshour Debate at 9 pm discussed the “insult” to Hindi by DMK Rajya Sabha member TKS Elangovan. The leader, in response to comments seen as union home minister Amit Shah’s pitch for Hindi, had earlier said that Hindi “will only make us Shudras”.
During the Times Now broadcast, political analyst and retired Navy officer Gokul Chandran tried to quote from BR Ambedkar’s book titled Who were the Shudras? to say that Shudra doesn’t necessarily signify caste, and that they were invaders of the Aryan race.
But before he could finish, Navika interrupted. “So we are invaders…with your permission can we live in this country, sir? Since you are the boss and the owner of this country, can we live in this country anymore?”
Chandran shook his head in response, saying that she could not. “Yes, you should go.”
“Where should I go, sir?” the anchor asked. “Wherever you want,” he replied.
The anger was hard to miss on Navika’s face, as she proceeded to ask him how “dare” he say that.
