"Yellowstone" season 5 part 2 has arrived with a bang. The part 2 premiere debuted on the Paramount Network on Sunday, November 10 and it was a major episode.

"Yellowstone" director Christina Voros had already told us that Costner's presence in these final episodes would be "integral," and after the first episode, we already know just how integral Costner's John Dutton III will be.

'Yellowstone' season 5 part 2 episode schedule
New episodes of "Yellowstone" season 5 part 2 (also referred to as season 5B) arrive on Paramount Network every Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
The first episode — confusingly, this is technically considered episode 9 of season 5 — premiered on November 10. Episode 10 is titled "The Apocalypse of Change" and will premiere this Sunday (Nov. 17) at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

'Yellowstone' season 5 part 2 trailers and first look
The season 5 part 2 premiere has already premiered, but there's never been a better time to look at the trailers we saw in advance of "Yellowstone" season 5 part 2.
The official trailer for "Yellowstone" promises a violent final six episodes. There are at least one or two deaths almost certainly teased in the trailer, but the final body count could end up much higher. As Beth Dutton says at the end of the trailer, "The only thing left to do is to kill as much as you can before they kill you."
What remains to be seen though, is how — or if — Costner's John Dutton III is written out of the show. Based on this trailer and the previous one, it's clear there is still some footage of Costner available to Taylor Sheridan to use, so Costner won't simply have disappeared off-screen during the show's hiatus. But it would be shocking if Costner's John Dutton wasn't killed off in some manner before the final episode is over.
Before the official trailer, we got a teaser trailer on YouTube titled "Generations." It didn't give us much new to go on, but it did include some shots and dialogue of Costner. Perhaps it was telling us to expect a few scenes with the now-departed star. Costner. It was definitely telling us that the feud between Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Jamie (Wes Bently) isn't going away quietly.
A few days before "Generations" dropped on YouTube, the show dropped a quick teaser on its Instagram. This teaser promised "generations of blood," something subsequent trailers continued to use as a tagline.
Finally, Paramount Network provided us with a first look at the new season of Yellowstone, which you can see in the images above. The most interesting one to me is the last one, which could foreshadow how the show reveals John Dutton's demise.
'Yellowstone' season 5 part 2 plot speculation
The biggest looming question about the new fifth-season episodes of "Yellowstone" is how it will handle the exit of Kevin Costner. Despite initially expecting Costner to not even appear in a scene, it's clear that he will appear in at least one episode of season 5 part 2. He certainly appears plenty in the official trailer for the final episodes.
In fact, one of the show's most prolific directors calls Costner "integral" to the show's final episodes. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, director Christina Voros said that "he [Costner's John Dutton III] is the patriarch and his presence is an essential component to the story. John Dutton is still central."
However, Costner still hasn't shot any new scenes, despite older footage being used in new episodes. So whatever John Dutton's final story is the ending will have to happen offscreen. It could be a dramatic death or a graceful retreat to some unseen location. Given that the first half of the fifth season ended with John and his son Jamie each scheming to potentially eliminate the other, it wouldn't be a surprise if the son ultimately tried to kill the father.
That could leave the rest of the Dutton family to pick up the pieces if it doesn't happen in the series finale. The loss of the family patriarch could have huge repercussions for the ranch and the Dutton business empire if it occurs earlier in season 5 part 2. The final episodes are likely to focus on a power struggle among John's children Jamie, Beth and Kayce, along with their various allies.
One star says the Costner of it all won't be a problem. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, star Kelly Reilly said that Costner's absence from the final episodes was always going to happen, and the manner of the absence won't change anything substantive. "It was always going to happen, it just happened a little bit differently."
If you want to know how the season ends ... well, there's a chance you can spoil yourself. An angry Montanan took to the Missoula subreddit and (potentially) spoiled the entire ending (h/t Taste of Country). I'm not going to reveal what they said here, but you can peruse the post at your own risk.
But if you don't want to spoil yourself, just know that it should be a shocking conclusion — at least according to one actor. Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton) told Newsweek that fans "won't be able to see it [the ending] coming."
If one character had their way though, they'd get to leave "Yellowstone" and the fighting behind. Reilly's recent comments about her character's relationship with Rip revealed that Beth would love to leave everything behind for a peaceful life.
"What she wants is a very simple, quiet life on a piece of land that nobody wants and just to be with him. It's unlike anything you would've imagined this woman wanted, but actually, that's who she is."
But will she get to finally just be with Rip? Based on the trailer, we're skeptical. Especially after Cole Hauser weighed in with his own comments. Speaking about the fate of his character Rip, Hauser said "You’ll have to wait. Listen, Rip does a lot of the killing. I’ll tell you that." Based on the show's violent trailer, I believe him.
'Yellowstone' spin-offs
"Yellowstone" is essentially a soap opera, though, so the political implications are likely to be less important than the personal drama. While these episodes could be the end of "Yellowstone" as a series, the "Yellowstone" universe is thriving.
A new season is currently planned for the prequel series "1923." There are also previously announced spin-offs "1944" (another prequel) and "6666" (set on the nearby 6666 Ranch).
Then there's the rumored show "2024." This was originally set to serve as a sequel to "Yellowstone," essentially continuing the series with a new lead character. Matthew McConaughey was tipped to lead the series (h/t The Hollywood Reporter), but an official casting announcement has yet to be made.
However, it seems at this time that "2024" has potentially been replaced with "The Madison." That show has already added several cast members, including Matthew Fox as Paul, a self-reliant bachelor who loves the outdoors (h/t Deadline). He's set to be joined by Michelle Pfeiffer, who will play the mother of Paige (Elle Chapman) and Abigail (Beau Garrett). They'll be joined by Patrick J. Adams, who is set to play Paige’s husband, and Amiah Miller will play Abigail’s eldest daughter. It will also feature Ben Schnetzer as Van, a “a salt-of-the-earth and neighborly Montana rancher” (h/t Variety).
There have also been some rumors of a potential sixth season. A late August report from Variety suggests that we could get a season 6 with stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reportedly in talks for top billing. Since that report though, comments from multiple cast members have indicated that season 6 probably won't happen and that season 5 will be the show's final season.
One such comment was an Instagram post from actress Jen Landon, who plays Teeter. In her post, she clearly refers to season 5 as the "last season of Yellowstone." It's not impossible that season 6 won't still come, but that certainly indicates season 5 was written with ending the show in mind.
She's not the only cast member to indicate that season 5 is officially the show's final season. Cole Hauser, one of the stars initially tipped to return for a potential season 6, indicated in an interview that these upcoming episodes will be the last for "Yellowstone." When speaking to Us Weekly, he said "You’ll have to stay tuned for November for how Taylor [Sheridan] wraps it up!” all but confirming that the season 5 finale will also be the series finale.
