People are being urged to take care on roads and pavements after a yellow warning for ice was issued for the North East.
The Met Office sent out the weather alert informing people to expect icy surfaces and high ground snow, leading to some difficult travelling conditions in the region on Saturday night and Sunday morning. The yellow warning runs from 10pm on Saturday to 10am on Sunday.
The alert covers areas in County Durham and Northumberland, where ice could form on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths. Members of the public are asked to be careful on any icy surfaces, where injuries could occur from slips and falls.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Frequent showers, falling as snow above around 400 metres with accumulations of 5-10 cm across the Southern Uplands, will gradually ease overnight with clear spells developing across northern Scotland initially, extending further south towards the end of Saturday night. This will allow wet surfaces to fall below freezing leading to some icy stretches on untreated surfaces."

Saturday:
Spells of rain this morning, heavy at times, especially at first, with snow likely on hilltops. Broken cloud and showers will follow, these becoming more frequent later as the wind strengthens to gale force in places. Feeling colder than Friday. Maximum temperature 7°C.
Saturday night:
Windy with gales, perhaps locally severe, and a band of rain gradually moving southwards before fragmenting to showers later. Rain or showers sometimes heavy, falling as snow over hill tops. Minimum temperature 0°C.
Sunday:
Early cloud and showers are quickly replaced by sunny conditions, before cloud and outbreaks of rain spread north late afternoon. The rain or showers may well be wintry over hilltops. Maximum temperature 4°C.
Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:
Clear or sunny spells and wintry showers each day, these largely confined to coastal areas while many inland areas remain dry. Widespread sharp overnight frosts and ice risk. Feeling cold.
