Yellow weather warning for ice issued as Storm Barra set to hit

A weather warning for ice has been issued across Greater Manchester overnight ahead of the arrival of Storm Barra.

The Met Office has issued the yellow weather warning across large parts of the UK as temperatures are set to fall.

The warning, which covers the whole of the North West, is in place from 9pm until 9am on Tuesday morning.

"Showers this evening, wintry over high ground, will gradually die out overnight," forecasters say.

"Wet surfaces are expected to fall below freezing quite quickly under clear skies.

"Ice is quite likely where surfaces remain untreated, or where showers wash off grit."

A chilly morning could be in store across the region as forecasters predict temperatures will dip as low as 2C until 9am.

It is expected to get slightly warmer later on Tuesday, eventually reaching a high of 5C by the early evening.

A further yellow weather warning for wind has also been issued for most of the UK on Tuesday.

The Met Office says travel disruption is 'likely' in some areas.

It's probable that some bus and train services will be affected, while some short-term loss of power is possible.

The arrival of Storm Barra could be particularly bad news for those who are still without power following Storm Arwen.

More than 3,000 homes - most in the North East - were still powerless on Sunday evening, nine days after the storm hit.

The Met Office says there is a chance of more power outages and a "slight chance" rural communities could be cut off.
