Scotland is bracing for gloomy weather as the the Met Office has issued a yellow warning for "strong" winds and heavy rain.
While most of the country will see sunny spells and scattered showers on Thursday, an area of heavy rain will spread from the west on Friday morning from 8am.
Waters are predicted to reach accumulations of 20-30 mm in a few hours, starting from the northwest before gradually moving southwards, then settling at 2pm. The fast rains may result in light flooding in some parts of the country, so drivers should ensure to take precautions when on the road.
Forecasters previously reported this rain will be paired with "strong" gale force winds, amid the fallout of Hurricane Ian, which tore through parts of Florida in the US on Wednesday. According to the Met Office, the jet stream, strengthened by the warm tropical air pushed northwards by the category four storm, will send an area of low pressure across the UK on Friday.
Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, Chris Almond, said: “This will bring a much wetter and windier spell than we’ve seen so far this autumn, but nothing that is unusual for the time of year.
“The fast-moving system will bring strong gale force winds, locally in excess of 60mph and heavy rain into the northwest before pushing quickly southeast through the day.
"We could see some minor impacts, such as surface water flooding or minor wind damage, as well as some short-lived impacts on ferry crossings, especially in exposed areas of western Scotland and eastern areas of Northern Ireland.
"Later in the day, parts of southeast England could experience winds of around 55mph, which may impact the English Channel too.”
