BOSTON — The Yankees will have to wait an extra day to try and rebound from their sloppy loss Friday to the Red Sox.
With persistent rain showering the city of Boston on Saturday, the two clubs will play a split doubleheader on Sunday. The first game will begin at 1:35 p.m., while the second game will start at 7:10 p.m. and air on Sunday Night Baseball.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone had expected a postponement as early as Friday evening, but he and his team still made the trip to Fenway Park amid the lousy weather on Saturday.
“It seemed like there was a glimmer of hope a couple hours ago,” Boone said when asked if having to make the trek irritated him. “So most of the guys have to come throw, do whatever, so can’t have it all. Better than waiting until seven, eight o’clock.”
Boone added that Clarke Schmidt will pitch Game 1 for the Yankees, while Luis Severino will pitch Game 2. The Red Sox had not decided on a Game 1 starter at the time of publication, but Brayan Bello will start Game 2.
The Yankees enter Sunday in a one-game hole this series, as the Red Sox blew them out, 15-5, in the opener. Yankees pitchers Domingo German and Matt Krook allowed most of the damage, and the team’s defense made a handful of ugly plays in the game.
“It wasn’t the brand of baseball that we’re used to playing,” said Josh Donaldson, who booted a ball in the game. “A little sloppy defensively, or a lot sloppy defensively today. It’s not in our DNA to do that. It happens sometimes. We’ll look to rebound and play better tomorrow.”
