The Yankees will conclude a rough 2023 season without top rookie Jasson Dominguez following tests that revealed a torn UCL in his right elbow, manager Aaron Boone announced Sunday.
Boone told reporters of Dominguez’s diagnosis following Sunday’s 4–3 win after he after he underwent testing during the game following a late scratch. He also shared that concerns surrounding the 20-year-old’s health began after his second career game on Sept. 2.
Following a win over the Astros, Boone said Dominguez began complaining of right elbow soreness. On Wednesday, the team started treating Dominguez, which led into Sunday, when, per Boone, the slugger “couldn’t pop the ball or really hit it hard” as he was testing his swing before facing Milwaukee.
While Boone mentioned the team had not yet scheduled surgery, he noted the recovery timeline is “usually nine to 10 months” for position players. ESPN’s Jeff Passan later reported Dominguez “may very well need Tommy John surgery” but “shouldn’t miss much time” in 2024.
With the season-ending injury now confirmed, New York’s former top prospect will now have to wait indefinitely to resume the strong start to his career.
After smashing a memorable home run in his MLB debut on Sept. 1, Dominguez went on a tear in eight games for the Yankees (71–72), slashing .258/.303/.980 with four home runs and seven RBI.
