Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton headed to injured list with strained PCL

NEW YORK _ Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton is headed to the injured list with a strained PCL, manager Aaron Boone said after Wednesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium.

Boone told reporters that Stanton would be re-evaluated in 10 days and would not travel to London with the team this weekend.

Stanton left Tuesday night's 4-3 win over the Blue Jays before the fourth inning with what the team announced as a "right knee contusion."

"He came in today and there's no swelling in there, but he's sore and stiff," Boone said. "He's just kind of going through treatment right now."

Earlier in the day, Boone said that results of the MRI on Stanton's right knee were "good" and that no new injury had been revealed.

"We're just seeing how the next couple hours unfold, and even the next couple days," Boone said. "...I think the fact that there's no swelling is a good sign. But, again, he came in stiff today. So, it's working through treatment and seeing how he responds to that. Hopefully, we'll be able to get some good information here in the next couple hours, but certainly in the next couple days."

Of the many Yankees who have been bitten by the injury bug, Stanton is chief among them. He missed two and a half months of the season with a biceps strain that was prolonged by shoulder and calf issues. He returned on June 18 and hit his first home run of the season in Monday's 10-8 win over Toronto.

"It's very important," Boone said about getting Stanton healthy. "This is a great player and very important to our club Obviously, when he's going well he's one of those rare guys that can impact a game in a profound way and carry a club when he's rolling hot. Hopefully, it's not something that's too long and we get him back up and running pretty soon because I feel like, over the last couple days, the timing and the at-bats have been getting real good. Hopefully this is a small bump in the road, but we'll just have to see."
