XO Kitty’s Audrey Huynh Praises Jenny Han For Creating Space For Asian Actors In Rom-Com

Strap in besties, because Netflix is about drop the second season of XO, Kitty — the iconic spin-off from the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise.

Lucky for you, we’ve got the inside scoop from newcomer Audrey Huynh. This fresh face is bringing the heat to K.I.S.S. (that’s Korean Independent School of Seoul, for the uninitiated), and she’s dishing out all the deets for the new season.

What happened in XO, Kitty Season 1?

Before we get into the Season Two goss, let’s catch you up on everything Season One of XO, Kitty — spoilers obviously ahead so please don’t yell at us.

The show follows the journey of To All The Boys’ Lara-Jean Song Covey’s (Lana Condor) sister Kitty (Anna Cathcart) embarking on her own rom-com journey.

At the start of the first season we see Kitty rocking up to Seoul hoping to chase down her long-distance boyfriend Dae (Choi Min-yeong), only to discover he was hiding hella big secrets from her. After dumping Dae, she unexpectedly caught feelings for Yuri (Gia Kim), who promptly got back together with her ex-girlfriend Juliana (Regan Aaliyah), leaving our girl Kitty in total romantic chaos.

If that wasn’t messy enough, Min Ho (Sang Heon Lee) decided to drop a full-blown love confession, at the start of a long plane ride to America. Like I need to know how the rest of that trip went, because I can’t decide if that’s my personal nightmare or dream.

Kitty’s K.I.S.S. bestie Q (Anthony Keyvan) was still wrestling with his own personal drama, and Kitty was left wondering whether she should peace out of K.I.S.S. or stick around for more potential heartbreak.

Season Two is promising to unpack all this delicious drama, and we are absolutely here for it.

New cast members in XO, Kitty Season 2

The full cast will be back this season including Anna Cathcart, Choi Min-yeong, Regan Aaliyah, Gia Kim, Anthony Keyvan, Sang Heon Lee, Michael K. Lee, Jocelyn Shelfo and Australia’s own Peter Thurnwald returning as Mr. Finnerty.

Joining the chaos this season is Audrey Hunyh as Stella, Kitty’s new roomie. “She’s so much fun,” Hunyh gushed to PEDESTRIAN.TV.

“She has so many little interesting things about her that I had a lot of fun playing on screen.”

Netflix also shared that Stella has a big fat crush on Min Ho which will surely cause chaos between her and her new roommate.

“I’m very, very excited for people to receive her. I think that she’s such a fun character and she just has so many layers,” said Audrey.

Audrey isn’t the only fresh face. We’ve got Sasha Bhasin as Preveena and Joshua Lee as Jin, who’s set to be Q’s track rival and former bully. The dramaaa!!

Audrey said the transition into the already established cast was extremely smooth and they’re all a bunch of besties now.

“It was so much fun. I was honestly very worried at first, like being new and joining this already very established cast, but they just made it so easy and so welcoming,” she said.

“We spent literally every second together, even off-set we would just go get dinner after we wrapped and we would go hang out on the weekends. So we literally never went a day without seeing each other. We tried a lot of new food places together. We would do photo booth pictures, make TikToks and just hang out in each other’s rooms. We got very, very close.”

I love when my fave TV besties are IRL besties!

It looks like Noah Centenio aka Peter Kavinsky will also be making a stop at KISS. If you’re new to the Jenny Han universe, Peter is Lara-Jean Covey’s boyfriend from the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before series.

“When I came to K.I.S.S., I’d never felt more like an outsider. Luckily, there’s nothing like a friendly face from home,” Kitty says as she gives Peter a big fat hug in the trailer.

Jenny Han creates space for Asian actors in rom-coms

Speaking of Jenny, Audrey couldn’t stop raving about working with the mastermind behind this Asian rom-com renaissance. “I’m such a huge fan of Jenny and the worlds that she’s able to create. I was such a huge fan of XO Kitty and The Summer I Turned Pretty,” Hunyh said.

“I know for me as a young Asian American woman, seeing characters that are written like me is so special, like seeing Lana Condor in To All The Boys, and just seeing someone on screen that was Asian and the lead was just so special to me as a young woman,” she explained.

“I think Jenny just has a way of creating these really authentic young characters. I think young representation and really just writing a character that is able to feel very true to what real life is like is really difficult, but she does it so well. I’m just such a huge fan of her and her things that she creates, I love it.”

Audrey, who is Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, and European, was also able to connect to her Korean heritage through the XO, Kitty filming experience.

“We were there for three months, and we got to kind of just live there and be fully immersed in the culture,” she shared. It seemed it wasn’t just work, it was an opportunity to go back to her roots.

“My mum’s family is Korean, and my mum actually got to come with me for the majority of filming, and just being able to share that experience with her and be where my halmeoni (grandma) was from was just so cool.” I’m not crying, you are!!

When is Season 2 of XO, Kitty coming out?

Set your alarms, because XO, Kitty Season Two drops on Netflix on January 16 at 7 PM AEDT.

Now if you’ll excuse me I plan on rewatching all of Season One to get me in the mood for the chaos that will surely come in the next season.
