Xi Jinping: China must oppose pro-Taiwan independent forces

BEIJING: In his first public address since being re-elected for a historic third term as China's president, Xi Jinping on Monday emphasized the importance of enhancing national security.

Xi, who now holds a significant amount of power as China's leader, was appointed for another five years in a break from traditional political practice. The National People's Congress, a highly orchestrated gathering of China's parliamentary members, also appointed a key ally of Xi, Li Qiang, as the new premier.

During the closing session of the NPC, Xi expressed his gratitude to the thousands of delegates present and pledged to prioritize the needs of the country and its citizens. He stated that security is crucial for development and stability is necessary for prosperity. He called for the modernization of national defense and armed forces, and for the people's armed forces to act as a strong defense for national sovereignty, security, and development interests.

On Taiwan, the self-ruled island which China claims its own, Xi said that China must oppose pro-independence and secessionist activities and the interference of external forces.

Xi also called for a consolidated stability in Hong Kong, which has been previously plagued by unrest, and for unification with Taiwan, which Beijing considers as part of its own territory. Xi acknowledged the heavy responsibility on his shoulders, and emphasized the trust of the people as the greatest driving force behind his leadership. He concluded by saying that the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation has entered an irreversible historical process.
