What’s new: President Xi Jinping will hold a summit with his U.S. counterpart Joe Biden next week on the sidelines of the 30th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in San Francisco, according to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement Friday.

The summit, which the White House said will be held on Nov. 15, will be the first face-to-face interaction between Xi and Biden since their meeting on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Bali last November, as the world’s two largest economies renew efforts to stabilize relations.

The two leaders will “discuss issues in the U.S.-PRC bilateral relationship, the continued importance of maintaining open lines of communication, and a range of regional and global issues,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement Friday.

Xi will also deliver a speech at the APEC meeting to “fully elaborate on China’s major propositions on deepening Asia-Pacific cooperation and driving regional and global growth,” according to a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson.

The background: Recent talks held between the two countries’ top officials have paved the way for the two leaders to meet.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan last month, when they had “substantive and constructive strategic communication” on issues including U.S.-China relations, high-level exchanges and the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Xi last visited the U.S. in 2017, when he met with then-president Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort.
