Xherdan Shaqiri, the former Bayern Munich and Liverpool winger, has officially announced his retirement from international football. The Swiss star made this decision after accumulating an impressive 125 caps for Switzerland throughout his career.
Shaqiri's international journey was marked by significant achievements, including scoring 32 goals for his national team. He holds the distinction of being the only Swiss player to participate in seven major tournaments, spanning from the World Cup in 2010 to Euro 2024.
During Euro 2024, the 32-year-old made two appearances for Switzerland. Unfortunately, the team was eliminated from the tournament in the quarterfinals following a penalty shootout loss to England.
Expressing his gratitude and reflecting on his time with the national team, Shaqiri took to Instagram to share his sentiments. He mentioned the unforgettable moments, seven tournaments, and the support of fans, concluding with a heartfelt message of thanks to all.
Shaqiri's illustrious career includes multiple league titles in both Switzerland and Germany, having won three each with FC Basel and Bayern Munich. Additionally, he clinched the Premier League title with Liverpool before moving to MLS side Chicago Fire in 2022.
