Back in the good old days, Guitar Hero was the highlight of every party, and Microsoft’s head of gaming Phil Spencer wants to bring it back.
During an interview with The Washington Post, Spencer spoke about Activision Blizzard’s acquisition by Microsoft and what some of his favorite franchises are in the publisher’s portfolio. Most people immediately think of Call of Duty or World of Warcraft when discussing Activision Blizzard’s games, but Spencer is eager to dive into the past.
“I was looking at the IP list, I mean, let’s go! King’s Quest, Guitar Hero, I should know this, but I think they got HeXen,” Spencer said via The Washington Post.
Since 2015’s Guitar Hero Live, the series has been dormant, so it’s been a hot minute since we have strummed plastic instruments around the TV. Props to those of you somehow managing to finish Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce on expert difficulty.
The deal between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard won’t be done until roughly 2023, at which point the company’s current CEO, Bobby Kotick, is reportedly stepping down. So it’ll be a while until we see any dream projects like a hypothetical new Guitar Hero.
Many video game industry experts are still in an uproar over Microsoft buying Activision Blizzard, primarily due to the ongoing allegations of misconduct by current and former employees.
