X User Unleashes Horde of Bots to Debunk Claim that Elon Musk Fulfilled His Promise to 'Defeat' Them

An X user has thoroughly debunked a claim that Elon Musk fulfilled his promise to "defeat the spam bots or die trying," with a post that triggered a tidal wave of bots into his direct messages.

A now deleted account, @ElonFactsX posted the claim. "In 2022, Elon Musk promised, 'We will defeat the spam bots or die trying!' Two years later, the spam bots appear to have basically vanished from X."

X user @MuhNameizJeff sought to debunk the claim with a tweet that has since gone viral.

"We'll see about that," he posted, followed by a string of keywords known to trigger bot accounts.

In a follow-up tweet, he shares a screenshot of his direct messages inbox. It's filled with automatically-generated messages, many of which contain offers of money.

The automated accounts, ran by software rather than people, are typically designed to collect clicks, engagement, or lure users into purchases or even to share sensitive information.

Beneath the claim is X's reader-added context box.

"As evidenced by the botted comments to the referenced tweet below, spam bots have not "vanished" from X. And having some bot replies "hidden" doesn't mean they are gone, simply just stacked away at the bottom. They still exist."
