X Factor star Lloyd Daniels says he felt pressure to hide same-sex relationship on show

X Factor star Lloyd Daniels has claimed he felt under pressure to hide a same-sex relationship while taking part in the show.

Lloyd, 28, took part in the 2009 series of singing competition.

Over the last week a number of former contestants have spoken out with claims of 'abuse' while appearing on the ITV talent series.

Jahmene Douglas, who was a finalist in 201, hit out at industry bosses for 'closing doors' on musicians to make room for other acts regardless of their talent.

The two stars join the likes of Cher Lloyd, Jedward and Rebecca Ferguson who have all shared their experiences over the last week.

Taking to his Instagram Live, Lloyd said he felt forced to hide his first gay relationship from the public.

Speaking in July 2020, he said: "I met someone on the show and we really clicked. I'd never had that emotion towards guys. I knew it was more than a friendship and it slowly unfolded. I ended up being with them for over a year.

"It was odd to accept it because I was going through a huge change in my life joining the music industry, I thought 'am I going mad?' I felt off-colour.

"The hardest part about it was not being able to talk about it."

Lloyd went on: "'I won't say I was under oath, but to that somewhat extent I couldn't talk about it because of my status.

"I had to aim my marketing towards teenage girls, that was what was going to sell the whole 'Lloyd Daniels, X Factor self'.

"I felt really suppressed, like I wasn't being my true self.

"It was really, really hard. I totally get that's how the music industry works. It's different now to how it was ten years ago."

An X Factor spokesperson said: "Duty of care to our contestants is of the utmost importance to us. We take welfare very seriously and have measures in place to ensure that they are supported."

According to The Sun, two more former X Factor contestants are willing to speak out about 'abuse' during their time on the ITV talent show.

It comes after Pop duo Jedward launched a Twitter tirade about their negative experience on the reality series and how they regret not telling the judges to 'f*** off' when they appeared on the show in 2009.

Cher Lloyd, who was a star on the show in 2010, accused the show of 'selling her a dream' in a TikTok video that has since gone viral.

Following a week of allegations, 2010 contestant Rebecca Ferguson has demanded a parliamentary inquiry into the music industry in general calling for tighter regulations to protect artists from being 'bullied' by managers and agents.

The X Factor aired for 15 series on ITV between 2004 and 2018 and became a Saturday night ratings hit for the channel.

It launched the careers some of the UK's biggest music acts in recent years including Little Mix and One Direction, who were put together by bosses on the show.

However, in the last month a number of X Factor alumni have been speaking negatively about their experience in the competition.

Cher Lloyd, who finished fourth on the 2010 series, has claimed she was 'sold a dream' when she starred on the show at the tender age of 17.

"How could I be so naive? They sold me the dream just to exploit me," she sang in a TikTok video

"Said darling you'll go far if you shake that a** and date a star. And if the record's taking off we'll take the money."

It's not the first time Cher has hit out at the talent show.

Last year, she claimed she'd been 'thrown to the wolves' after being sent death threats and racist abuse from viewers.

Twins John and Edward Grimes, better known as Jedward, have also been vocal on Twitter this week about their time on the show.

The pair said they regretted not telling the judges to 'f*** off' after being subject to criticism.

"Every contestant on The X Factor was a slave to the show and got paid Zero while they made millions!" claimed the brothers.

"The fact that every contestant has to act like their judge mentors them! When in reality all they care about is their pay check!"

Former 2010 contestant Rebecca Ferguson also used her social media as a platform as she campaigned for a parliamentary inquiry into the music industry generally.

Rebecca said artists needed protection from an 'archaic' systems that even compromised their health.

"At one point in my career I collapsed three times in a day, I was unconscious. My head hit the floor. No ambulance was called. This is one of many stories. This is the reality of artist mistreatment, this is why I fight," she told her followers.

Rebecca said she'd previously been scared to speak out as she was concerned for the welfare of her children Lillie, 18, and Karl, 16.
