X Engineer Reveals App's DM System Will Be 'Gone Soon': 'Who Asked for This'

Social media users of X (formerly Twitter) are panicking after an engineer at the company casually revealed that the platform's direct messaging system will soon be completely removed.

Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter in late 2022 and rebranded it as "X," the platform has undergone a slew of controversial changes, from removing verification badges to shifting toward a subscription-based model. Over time, many legacy features have been altered or deprecated, frustrating long-time users who feel the app is drifting away from its original purpose.

On Wednesday, X engineer Zach Warunek posted a cryptic but alarming message on the platform, stating, "If you aren't the one actually writing/prompting the code, you are [not gonna miss it]."

When a user flagged a bug affecting message loading and asked for help, Warunek brushed it off, replying, "This page will be deleted soon so no."

He went on to clarify that not just message requests, but "the whole entire DM's will be gone soon." The exchange quickly spread across X, sparking widespread outrage and confusion.

Users expressed their dismay with comments like "Who the f--k asked for this?" and "Might as well delete replies next."

"That sounds like a terrible idea," another added, while still others chimed in to explain that DMs are "half the reason" they still use the platform.

Many questioned why X would eliminate one of its core features rather than address bugs or introduce useful enhancements. With no official announcement or clarification from the company, speculation is mounting over whether the engineer's claim was serious, premature, or a poorly delivered joke.

So far, X leadership has remained silent on the matter.
