Wynne Evans scores new job alongside controversial Strictly star after tour axing

Wynne Evans has secured his first job since being axed from the Strictly Come Dancing live tour.

The Welsh opera singer, 53, was dropped from the tour after he was caught making a vile sexual remark to host Janette Manrara during a photocall in January.

He apologised for causing “pain” with his “inappropriate language” and has since taken a break from hosting his BBC Radio Wales show and has reportedly been axed from the GoCompare insurance adverts.

However, this week it was announced that Evans will make a comeback at the Wight Proms festival this summer alongside controversial Strictly professional dancer Giovanni Pernice - who was previously investigated over his treatment of dance partner Amanda Abbington.

The festival, which takes place from 12 to 17 August at the Isle of Wight, celebrates comedy, drag, opera, musical theatre, dance, sport and more.

The event’s official Instagram account confirmed the pair will be taking part in a post on Wednesday.

The page shared headshots of Evans and Pernice alongside Lee Mead and the comedy cabaret group Fascinating Aida.

“Announcing some of this year's #WightProms Headliners: @pernice.giovanni @fascinatingaida @wynneevans @leemead_official. Tickets go on sale this Friday 4th April! Book here: www.wightproms.co.uk/buy-tickets-2025,” the caption read.

Manrara was among the stars who liked the post on Instagram.

Pernice will take to the stage on August 16, with an announcement revealing he will talk about Strictly and “spill the beans on what it is like touring with Anton Du Beke”.

Evans will perform the next evening for the Last Wight of the Proms as “the festival reaches its climax in a rousing celebration of British music and flag-waving”.

The Celebrity Masterchef star spent three months out of the limelight after he was overheard making an obscene joke to Manrara.

Evans initially dismissed it as an “in-joke” that tour colleagues were in on and sought legal counsel to clear his name.

A source recently claimed he has a 30-page defence dossier he will take into showdown talks with the BBC.

“As far as Wynne is concerned, he has been wronged. He understands the language he used was not appropriate but it’s all been taken so out of context,” an insider told The Sun.

Meanwhile, Pernice was plunged into controversy in 2023 when his dance partner Abbington accused him of creating a “toxic environment” and displaying“inappropriate, mean, nasty bullying” behaviour on the show.

The BBC said it “upheld some, but not all, of the complaints made”, and apologised to Abbington.

It is understood the review had no findings relating to physical aggression but upheld accusations of swearing and giving negative feedback.

Pernice, who “rejected any suggestion of abusive or threatening behaviour”, welcomed the conclusion of a BBC review into the Sherlock actress’s complaints.

The dancer didn’t appear on Strictly in 2014 and instead joined the Italian version called Ballando Con Le Stelle, which he won with actress and singer Bianca Guaccero.
