WWE stars hit back at "McTapper" Conor McGregor after WrestleMania claim

WWE stars have come together on social media to mock Conor McGregor after the UFC star said their roster "feared" him following WrestleMania.

McGregor took to Twitter to claim he was too intimidating to be offered an appearance alongside the likes of Brock Lesnar, Logan Paul and Ronda Rousey at last weekend's two-day pay-per-view showcase. “Why wasn’t I at Wrestlemania?" McGregor asked fans on Twitter. "They all fear me, that’s why.”

The Irishman, who has long been tipped to make a switch to professional wrestling from his MMA roots, has had a long-running rivalry with the stars of the sports entertainment company. And he further fuelled that fire with his controversial comments on social media over the weekend.

Ex-world heavyweight champion Drew McIntyre revived Khabib Nurmagomedov's famous catchphrase when he mocked the Irishman by saying "Shut up McTapper". He wasn't the only WWE star to tweet at McGregor, with a host of other names replying.

Former world champion and renowned collegiate wrestler Dolph Ziggler, whose real name is Nic Nemeth, mocked the Irishman for his size. McGregor has fought at his heaviest at 170lb, which would be considered tiny by WWE standards, and Nemeth joked that "even I can’t cut down to flyweight".

Fellow Irishman Sheamus, real name Stephen Farrelly, replied simply with an emoji of scissors. But some were actually in favour of the UFC legend coming over to the promotion, with former MMA fighter Sonya Deville offering to get him a match. She tweeted "Because I’m the fooking boss. Call me."

McGregor was also asked to make an appearance next year by Irish star Becky Lynch, who lost her Raw women's championship to Bianca Belair. She replied to his statement by saying "Hey man. I could have used you. Bianca brought an army. Next year?"

He would have been one of many fighters to compete had he taken to the stage in Dallas over the weekend. Paul won his tag team match while teaming up with The Miz against Rey Mysterio and Dominick Mysterio, but he was the only fighter to get a win with Lesnar losing to Roman Reigns and Rousey losing to Charlotte Flair in their respective world title bouts.

The Irishman has long been touted for a possible move to professional wrestling due to his colourful attitude and trash talking. But he is currently focused on getting fighting fit for a return to the UFC octagon later this year after suffering a broken leg last year against Dustin Poirier.

He is angling for a shot at welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, but first must return to full-contact sparring, which is expected later this month. He is currently in boxing training at the Crumlin Boxing Club, where he can hit pads but not spar fully as yet.
