WWE star Big E was taken to hospital after suffering a broken neck on last’s episode of SmackDown.
The former WWE champion was competing in a tag team match alongside Kofi Kingston against Sheamus and relative newcomer Ridge Holland.
The grappler, real name Ettore Ewen, was involved in a scuffle outside the ring with Holland.
The former rugby player attempted to deliver a belly-to-belly suplex to the 2021 Money in the Bank winner, but unfortunately the move was not executed correctly.
Harrowing footage showed Big E land right on his head instead of his back and lay in a heap on the floor near the steel steps.
Fans in attendance captured pictures and videos of multi-time tag team champion being lifted onto a stretcher and carried backstage during an ad break.
Media outlet WrestlingInc reported that he gave a thumbs up to the audience as he was being taken away.
Fellow publication PWInsider later reported that Big E was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, where WWE held SmackDown tonight.
The match continued despite the powerhouse's absence and his partner Kingston was then pinned by Sheamus after a distraction from SmackDown’s newest acquisition, Pete Dunne, now named Butch.
Big E uploaded a short video on twitter providing an update following the devastating incident.
Sporting a neck brace, the WWE superstar also thanked everybody for their support and kind words of encouragement.
"I can't thank all of you beautiful people enough for your concern and your messages, it's very heartwarming," he says in the video.
"I can move all of my digits, that's always a good thing, strength feels fine.
"But unfortunately, right now they tell me my neck is broken, so there's that.
“But once again, thank you everybody, I'll be good, don't worry, go to sleep, don't worry about 'ol me, but for real, thank you. I appreciate all of you, for real."
Fellow superstars tweeted their well-wishes to Big E, as Sasha Banks wrote: “We love you Big E,” while former WWE champion Bobby Lashley penned: “Get well soon E. You got this.”
Current Raw Women's champion Becky Lynch said: "One of the best humans in the world. I’m hoping you’ve been keeping it a secret that you have wolverine-esque healing powers. Thinking of you. Love you E."
Xavier Woods, member of three-man trio The New Day with Big E, provided an update of his own when he tweeted: "Went to see E and he’s in good spirits. Hell of a guy and beyond proud to call him my brother."
