WWE legend Kurt Angle gave withering response to request from UFC star Colby Covington

WWE legend Kurt Angle admitted he was uncertain who Colby Covington was before handing the UFC star permission to use his iconic entrance music.

The UFC star recently defeated bitter rival Jorge Masvidal to maintain his status as the leading contender in the welterweight division behind champion Kamaru Usman. Covington requested to use Angle's infamous entrance music before his clash with Robbie Lawler which has since continued throughout his glittering career.

However the WWE sensation has admitted that he granted the star his blessing to use the music after researching his UFC record in detail. "Well, he approached me and asked me if he could use it and I said, 'I don't know," Angle told The Schmo. "Because I don't know who you are,' and I did some research on him and found out how damn good he is. I said, 'Yes, you can definitely use my music.' Colby Covington is as good as they get."

Angle's infamous entrance music was most recently used for Covington's clash with Masvidal in Las Vegas, with the crowd proceeding to chant along in a similar fashion to the former wrestler's entrances during his days in the WWE. Covington has previously admitted he is a fan of wrestling and this aided his choice of music to walk to the octagon.

Covington was defeated by welterweight champion Usman for a second time in their rematch last year which left him frozen out of the title picture. He later opted to settle a score with former teammate Masvidal after their previous friendship turned sour. After recording a vital victory to reignite the possibility of a future trilogy with Usman, a lack of presentable challenges await at 170lbs with No.2 challenger Gilbert Burns set to face Khamzat Chimaev later this month.

Covington has called for a mega-fight with lightweight star Dustin Poirier who has previously claimed he could move up to 170lbs to face Nate Diaz. 'Chaos' has also admitted he could move up to middleweight and challenge current champion Israel Adesanya. He has claimed that his wrestling ability would be too much to handle for the Nigerian star.

"Why can’t I go up and fight Adesanya? I won’t have to cut one pound, I’ll just wake up and fight at my natural weight," Covington told MMA Fighting. "That guy can’t stop what I do, and I truly believe that wholeheartedly. I do American wrestling. This is mixed martial arts and nobody can blend the martial arts like me. He was getting taken down by Robert Whittaker.

"That guy has never taken a wrestling class, let alone being a D-1, high-level collegiate [wrestler] led by a master instructor like Dan Gable, who is one of the legends, one of the forefathers of American wrestling.

"You saw in my last fight with Jorge, I didn’t even break a sweat bouncing him around the octagon, telling him to lick my nuts, telling him he’s still my little son and I wasn’t even breathing hard. He was being held up by two people."
