WSL: ‘Very odd’ fixture decision overshadows Arsenal’s title clash with Man United as Wolfsburg tie looms

Jonas Eidevall has hit out at the scheduling that sees his Arsenal side face Manchester United in a crucial Women’s Super League clash tonight, just four days before their Champions League semi-final against Wolfsburg.

The Gunners have not played since before this month’s international break, having had a gap in their calendar while the FA Cup semi-finals were played last weekend, but now face two of their biggest games of the season in quick succession.

Eidevall is furious that, while Chelsea have a free midweek to prepare for their Champions League semi-final first leg at home to Barcelona, the Gunners have to travel to WSL leaders United before flying to Germany.

”I find it very odd that we are the only team of the two English teams that are forced to play before our semi-final,” Eidevall said. “It's like you want one of the teams to have a better chance to succeed than the other.

“I can't see the reasons for it. It's something we have to look into after, for the appropriate time, because I can't see the logic.”

Third-placed Arsenal currently have a game in hand over United and can go level on points with Mark Skinner’s side with victory in Leigh this evening.

“We can only focus on what we do have and now this is the schedule we have, that we need to go to Manchester and play well there, and we need to go to Wolfsburg,” Eidevall added.

“But of course, it's preference to have, like the other team does, no games at all, to train and to prepare for the Champions League."
